Draft - Installing Microsoft Teams and Office

Students and staff are entitled to a free subscription of Microsoft Office for use on PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, which includes:

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive (with 1TB of Storage), Skype for Business, OneNote, Publisher (PC only), Access (PC only) and Teams

Installing Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a program/app within the Microsoft Office Suite. It is installed with the rest of the apps (Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc) by following the steps below under 'Install Microsoft Office'. However, Microsoft Teams can also be downloaded and installed separately from the Microsoft Office suite, directly from Microsoft's Website:

Microsoft Teams is Universal communication and collaboration platform that combines persistent workplace chat, video meetings, file storage. 'Teams' is being used to conduct lectures remotely on some modules, therefore you may be asked to use Teams in order to attend specific online lectures.

How to download & install Microsoft Office

 

 Microsoft Office for PC

Follow these steps to download the application via your web-based University email account:

  • If you already have an earlier version of Microsoft Office installed, it is recommended that you first uninstall Office from 'Settings/Apps/Apps & features' and reboot your computer
  • Then go to mail.chi.ac.uk and log in
  • Click your avatar in the top right, then 'My account'then 'Office apps - manage': This image shows the location of the manage office apps button which can be found on the my account page
  • Then select the version of Microsoft Office you would like and select 'Install Office' : This image shows the install office button on the apps management page
  • When your installation file has been downloaded, run the .exe file and follow instructions until the package is installed (the procedure for this will vary depending on your browser)
  • If prompted to enter either a product key or sign in, click 'Sign in to an existing Office subscription' then authenticate with your full University email address (not just your username).

If you have a device running Windows 10 S, you must install Office from the Windows Store (as the msi installer will not work).

Skype for Business on Windows is also available as a separate download.
