Mendeley

Overview

Mendeley is a reference management programme. Using Mendeley, you can collect, store and organise your research sources. The programme allows you to input your own references; import/export references from databases; create bibliographies; use Mendeley Cite plugin in MS Word and integrate with Mendeley online.

There are two versions of Mendeley:

Support Me - Estate Management Requests

Calls can be logged to Estate Management via the 'Estates' link on the SupportMe home page, e.g. for reporting issues with power sockets, heating, plumbing etc.

Once your call is logged it will be forwarded to the appropriate team, and you'll receive a confirmation email with a call reference number to your university account.

For all other requests, including for IT and Library services, please visit the Support Me help page.

PowerPoint - How to remove the background from an Image

PowerPoint has a feature which allows you to remove the background from an image. Although it has limitations such as needing a high-resolution image and a clearly defined background/foreground, It still has many uses and can allow you to bypass the need for you to search for a cut-out image to start with.

    Inserting an Image

The first step to remove the background of an image is to insert the image you wish to remove the background from. If you are not sure how to add an image to your PowerPoint, there is a guide here.

    PowerPoint - Zoom Slides (Prezzi)

    PowerPoint - Zoom Slides

PowerPoint has a new feature which mimics the style of presentation of Prezzi, using one large slide to place all of the subsequent slides on. Throughout the presentation, these slides will be zoomed into when that slide is reached, giving the impression that the whole presentation is encapsulated into a single slide.

    Excel - Drop-down lists

    Excel - Drop-down lists

Excel has a feature that allows you to format a cell so that it may only contain certain answers you have specified. These will be displayed as a drop-down list that displays when a cell with the formatting on is selected. This is useful for removing things such as spelling errors or typos and allows less chance for error whilst inputting data.

    Excel - Find and replace

    Excel - Find and Replace

Find and/or replace is a powerful feature that allows you to search for a text string within your data set. It will show you all of the times that Excel can see the text string in your document, allowing you to be taken to the next word by clicking the 'next' button. If you then wish to replace a text string with your own input, en masse or individually.
