Quick guide for a Mac running OSX (e.g. MacBook Air)
- Turn on the LFD
- Set the TV source to HDMI3 (Apple TV)
- Don’t worry if it says “no signal”, the Apple TV is most likely in standby mode
- Connect to Wi-Fi on your Mac
- Click the AirPlay icon and choose S3-AppleTV
- The LFD will display a 4 digit code on screen, and your Mac will prompt you to insert this code
- Once you’ve inserted the code your Mac desktop will be mirrored on the LFD
- To disconnect, click the AirPlay icon again and choose Turn AirPlay Off
In depth guide for a Mac running OSX (e.g. MacBook Air)
1. Preparation
Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and connected to eduroam. Note: mirroring will NOT work with _thecloud
System Preferences > Network
If Status says Off then click Turn Wi-Fi On
Sometimes Bluetooth may need to be enabled to connect via AirPlay:
System Preferences > Bluetooth
Enable Bluetooth
2. Turn on the LFD
Blue - on
Red - standby
If the LFD has a blue light in the bottom left corner then the LFD is already on
If the LFD shows a red light press the power button on the LFD so you see a blue light.
3. Set the LFD source
Keep pressing the source button until HDMI3 is selected (Apple TV)
After selection don’t worry if it says “no signal”, the Apple TV will probably be in standby mode.
4. Connect device to LFD
From your Mac click the AirPlay icon and choose S3-AppleTV
Note: if you don't see the Airplay icon, try to connect via this method:
- System Preferences
- Displays
- Set AirPlay Display to S3
Or enable the AirPlay tray icon:
- System Preferences
- Displays
- Tick "Show mirroring..."
If you still do not have an AirPlay option, you may need to upgrade your OSX Mountain Lion 10.8 or newer.
The LFD will display a 4 digit code on screen
Enter this code in the popup box on the Mac e.g. 1813
Once you’ve entered the code your MacBook desktop will be mirrored on the LFD
Any sound coming from your device should be playing through the speakers below the LFD. If you cannot hear sound make sure the right side speaker is turned on and the volume levels are high enough
5. To disconnect
Click the AirPlay icon again and choose Turn AirPlay Off
Troubleshooting
- Set the LFD source to HDMI3, then try again.
- Enable Wi-Fi then try again: System Preferences > Network > Set Status to On
- Enable Bluetooth then try again: System Preferences > Bluetooth > Set Bluetooth to On
- Make sure Apple TV is awake (with white light on front), if not awake press the Menu button on the Apple TV remote control, this should wake the device and you’ll see a blue light, then try again.
- Unplug the power lead from the Apple TV for 5 seconds. Plug power lead back in and make sure has a white light on front, then after 1 minute try again
- Completely reboot your laptop or mobile device, then try again
- If your OSX/IOS operating system is quite old, you may need to update it to support AirPlay
