Word - Create Hanging Indents on your paragraphs

How to create a Hanging Indent on your paragraphs

Note about using the automatic referencing features

This guide will show you how you can create hanging indents that you may need to use in your referencing or simply to format your paragraphs throughout your document.

If however, you are using the automatic Bibliography or Insert Citation feature this will automatically use hanging indents on your references:  Illustrative image

In this guide it'll be assumed that you wish to create a hanging indent manually, so that you may apply it to any paragraph you wish:

  • Once you're happy the references are correctly typed out: Illustrative image
  • Place the blinking text cursor at the beginning of your second line, before any text and right-click. Then select paragraph from the menu:  Illustrative image
  • Under the Indentation section, use the Special pull-down menu to select Hanging Illustrative image
  • Use the By option to select the size of the indent: 0.5cm is generally what is used by most courses.

Once this is enabled you should see that the hanging indent has been created:  Illustrative image
