Importing S1 and S2 content to an AY module page

Modules that run over both semesters will now have one page for the whole year denoted by an 'AY' occurrence.

If the previous year's content was separated into the S1 and S2 occurrences then you will need to follow these instructions to merge the content into one page.

Step 1 - Calculate the total sections

Add together the number of topics in S1 and S2 to see how many topics you need overall:

  • In the Navigation pop out menu click on 'Sections'   Illustrative image
  • Hover over the final section link, and see what the number is at the end of the URL in the bottom left corner of the screen, this is the number of sections in that module page  Illustrative image
  • Once you have found out how many sections are in each add this together, and add 1 for the 'General' topic in the second page. this is the number of sections you need in the 'AY' occurrence.

Step 2 - Create the sections

  • In the AY occurrence set the number of sections to your total number of S1 and S2 sections.
  • In this case I have 15 in S1 and 18 in S2, the S2 page will also need the content from the General topic so add one for this so 34 topics all together
  • Go to the bottom of the empty page and click add topics, you already have 10 topics by default so add the amount of topics you need in addition to this, so in this case we need to add 24 topics.  Illustrative image

Step 3 - Import Semester 2

Import the Semester 2 content *it is important to do semester 2 first

This can be done via the blue box if you have one or by the import function in the cog. See the Importing content from other Moodle pages help page.

Step 4 - Move the topics

We now need to move each topic to the bottom of the page, to allow space for the S1 import. With editing on, click on the crosshair of the bottom topic with content in it and either hold it and drag it into place, or click it and click on the last topic in the page so in this case I am moving topic 18 to topic 34  Illustrative image

Refresh the page to allow the headings to update correctly.

Then move topic 17 to Topic 33, refresh the page, then topic 16 to topic 32, refresh the page and so on.

Step 5 - Move the header section

Once you have moved all of your S2 topics down the page, you will still have the top section 0 (general info) that can't be moved. You will need to copy and paste the content from it into the appropriate section below and move any activities and resources to that section using the crosshair next to them.  In this case, the last moveable topic went into Topic 17, so I need to copy the content and move the activities in the header section to Topic 16.

Note: the Announcements activity should remain at the top and not be moved

Once you have copied the content, go into edit on the top section and delete the content.  To ensure there is no residual formatting, use the HTML </> button select all, and delete. If the title is a custom one, untick the box so that it reverts to 'General'

Step 6 - Import Semester 1

You should now have a page that has as many blank sections as your semester 1 page has, with the semester 2 content starting after this. Double check your blank sections and add more if required (remember to move them up to the top once you add them)

You can then import semester 1. See the Importing content from other Moodle pages help pageNote: you will not have a blue box so will need to follow the set of instructions half way down the screen

Rather than clicking jump to final step, click next and untick any Announcements or news forum activities.

Step 7 - Finish!

If you have ended up with more than one announcements or News Forum, delete the extras so there is just one Announcements forum, check that the last topic in S1 and the first topic in S2 are correct and haven't merged or that there isn't a spare topic in-between them.

If this is all correct you have now finished! If you have any issues please contact the Technology Enhanced Learning team for further help - TEL@chi.ac.uk
