How to download / install Microsoft Office

 

Microsoft Office
for PC

Download the application via your web based University email account:

  • If you already have an earlier version of Microsoft Office installed, it is recommended that you firstly uninstall Office from 'Settings/Apps/Apps & featues' and reboot your computer
  • Then go to mail.chi.ac.uk and log in
  • Click your avatar in top right then My account  Illustrative image then Install Options Illustrative image
  • You can now choose to download the 32 bit or 64 bit installation, then click Install office Illustrative image
    Note: 32-bit Office can be installed on 32-bit or 64-bit operating systems. However, 64-bit Office can only be installed on 64-bit operating system.

  • When your installation file has been downloaded, run the exe file and follow instructions until the package is installed (the procedure for this will vary depending on your browser)
  • If prompted to enter either a product key or sign in, click Sign in to an existing Office subscription then authenticate with your full University email address (not just your username).

If you have a device running Windows 10 S, you can only install Office from the Windows Store, rather than attempting to use a msi installer.

Skype for Business Basic is also available as a separate download. However, this has fewer capabilities than full Skype for Business.

Download the application via your web based University email account:

How many machines / devices can I run this subscription on?

Each user can install Microsoft Office on 5 PCs or Macs, 5 tablets (Windows, iPad, and Android), and 5 phones. 

Is this a full version Office?

Yes, this is full Microsoft Office on the PC, Mac, iPhone / iPod Touch, and Android platform and all are available for offline use.

How long will the free subscription of Microsoft Office last for?

You will be licensed for the duration of your course(s) / employment because the licence is linked to your University email account.

 


Check if you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows

You can check system settings to find out if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows:

  • On Windows 10 or Windows 8.1: right-click the Start button then click System.
  • On Windows 8.0: on your keyboard press Windows Key and D together (to put into desktop mode), then hover the mouse in very bottom right corner, and from the popup menu click Settings, then PC Info.
  • On Windows 7: click the Start button, right-click Computer then click Properties
