What is recording in PowerPoint? #
PowerPoint 2019 and later includes a built‑in Record feature that allows you to narrate your slides using audio or video. It also captures timing information for slide changes and animation triggers.
Once completed, the recording is embedded directly onto each slide. You can also export your presentation as a video file for uploading to ChiPlayer or other platforms.
How to start recording #
- Open your presentation.
- Select the Recording tab on the ribbon.
- Choose From Beginning to record the entire presentation, or From Current Slide to start from the slide you are currently viewing.
- On the recording screen, switch on your camera and microphone, then press Record to begin.
To move through your slides while recording, you can:
- Click anywhere on the slide
- Use your keyboard arrow keys or spacebar
- Use any pre-set animation or transition timings
- Use the navigation buttons in Presenter View
When you finish, the recording is automatically saved to each slide.
Presenter View modes #
You can choose between several viewing modes while recording:
- Teleprompter View – Large notes displayed above a preview of the current slide. Does not show the upcoming slide.
- Presenter View – Shows the next slide preview and your notes in a sidebar. This is the default recording mode.
- Slide View – Displays only the current slide with no notes or next slide preview. Useful if you plan to annotate during recording.
Deleting or re‑doing a slide recording #
After recording, an audio or video icon will appear on each slide. To remove a recording:
- Select the embedded media and press Delete, or
- Use Clear Recording to remove the recording from the current slide or the entire presentation.
Exporting your recording as a video #
After finishing your recording, PowerPoint will prompt you to Export your presentation as a video. If you close the recorder, you can still export later by selecting Export Video on the Recording tab.
Choose your preferred video format and save your file. This exported video can then be uploaded for sharing.
